Island Plan approved

The 2011 Island Plan has been approved by the States of Jersey by the overwhelming majority of 37 votes to 1.

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Senator Freddie Cohen, stated: "I am delighted the States has approved this sustainable plan designed to protect the countryside and regenerate our urban areas. It has been a long and very illuminating plan debate and the Plan now represents the combined views of the States Assembly."

Key elements of the Island Plan include:

    • the creation of a new Coastal National Park
    • the provision of 450 affordable Homebuy2 homes for purchase at around £250,000 for a three bedroomed home
    • the provision of  450 social rented homes to be rented at discounted levels
    • a brand new policy for affordable housing delivered from developer contributions
    • the protection of an extra 600 vergees of land through its inclusion in the Green Zone
    • strengthening of the protection of the Countryside
    • establishment of regeneration zones at East of Albert, Fort Regent and the Airport
    • no large scale rezoning of green fields
    • up to date development policies
    • policies for the wise use of natural resources policies to encourage renewable energy

    The Island Plan has been through extensive public consultation and two examinations in public held by independent planning inspectors. It is the first Island Plan produced in such an open and consultative way.
