Job advice at the 2013 Careers Fair

04 July 2013

Nearly 50 employers and industry bodies will gather on Wednesday 10 July 2013 for Careers Jersey’s annual Careers Fair. The event is at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel from 1pm-7pm and is free for islanders of all ages and career stages to attend.

Career and employment information will be available from a broad range of industries, from construction to childcare, IT to health, and law to hospitality. There will also be advice on ways into work, including entry-level roles such as apprenticeships and professional qualifications for senior positions.

The States of Jersey's ‘Back to Work’ schemes will also be represented.

Career options

The Careers Fair is an opportunity to meet industry experts and careers advisers and is equally relevant to students about to finish college/university, those who have been made redundant and are considering their next move or Islanders who are out of work and looking for job-hunting advice.

The Work Related Learning Manager at Careers Jersey, Sue Walsh, is coordinating the event. She commented “We have been encouraged by the positive response and support from local employers resulting in a great representation across a wide range of industries.

"It’s a tough job market out there and we’ve hit some challenging times. Getting the right information, advice and guidance on learning and work, at the right time, has never been more important. This is why our Careers Fairs are considered such a success. It’s a great opportunity for people from all ages and backgrounds to talk to practitioners about their career paths and qualifications.”

Industry zone

The event, which is organised by Careers Jersey, is sponsored by Jersey Finance and Freedom Media. Jersey Finance will be creating an industry zone with representatives from finance and law. The Communications Manager at Jersey Finance, Carla Harris, said “Although it remains a challenging environment for job seekers, the positive news is that there are vacancies across the finance industry.

"We look forward to welcoming people to our area where they can speak to professionals at all levels already working in the industry, to get a better understanding of the skills employers are looking for. We’ll also be running a competition with our co-sponsor to win an iPad and work experience.”

The Creative Director at Freedom Media, Hannah Shellswell, said “Bring your friends and your acting skills to take part on our interactive film set. See yourself on the big screen doing some of the best jobs in the world… be an astronaut, a pop star, pro surfer or a TV newsreader. Whether you want to work in front of the camera or behind it, Freedom Media can offer top tips on how to get into the media industry.”

A series of free industry talks will also take place throughout the afternoon.
