Hampshire Gardens to be refurbished

05 February 2014

Residents at a St Helier housing development are to benefit from a major investment programme this year.

Hampshire Gardens’ 39 homes will be completely modernised and re-equipped as part of the Housing Department’s programme to bring its social housing property portfolio up to the Decent Homes Standard.

Hampshire Gardens was built in the mid-1970s and the property reflects building standards at the time. The buildings, which face onto Aquila Road, have flat roofs, single-glazed aluminium windows, and low levels of insulation.

Bringing them up to the Decent Homes Standard will involve:

  • wrapping the entire building in an external wall insulation system
  • replacing and insulating the roof
  • replacing all of the windows with new double glazing

New kitchens and bathrooms will also be installed, and the homes rewired and redecorated.

Commitment to UK Decent Homes Standard

Housing Minister Andrew Green said “The Housing Department, or Andium Homes as it will be from July, has the largest portfolio of residential property in Jersey to manage and maintain. Some of the homes were built 40 – 50 years ago when the modern materials we have now did not exist.

“We are committed to a programme of refurbishment and improvement to the minority of homes that fall short of the UK Decent Homes Standard. It takes time but we are determined to do the job properly, as well as investing in new properties that are being built in Jersey to the very highest standards. Hampshire Gardens is the latest community to benefit from this rolling programme and we will work closely with residents to ensure they are inconvenienced as little as possible.”

It’s expected that work will begin at Hampshire Gardens in September.
