Romanian Ambassdor visits

05 September 2014

The Romanian Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Dr Ion Jinga, will visit Jersey on 8 and 9 September 2014.

On the morning of 9 September, the Ambassador will sign a mutual recognition of driving licences agreement between Jersey and Romania.

The agreement will allow holders of driving licences from either jurisdiction to acquire the necessary licence to drive in Romania or Jersey without having to retake their driving test.

During his visit, Dr Jinga will meet the Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, the Minister for External Relations, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, and the Minister for Treasury and Resources, Senator Philip Ozouf. He will also meet some of the Island’s Romanian residents at the Town Hall to discuss issues relating to the Romanian community in Jersey.

Dr Jinga’s visit, the first by a Romanian Ambassador to the Island, follows a meeting with Senator Bailhache at the Romanian Embassy in London earlier this year.

Senator Gorst said “There are around 1,000 Romanians living in Jersey and I trust that the agreement the Ambassador has come here to sign will be of benefit to those Islanders. I look forward to the Ambassador’s visit and I hope that, as well as engaging with our local Romanian community, he will also have the opportunity to discover more about the Island’s culture and the high standards of regulation and services of our financial services industry.”

The Ambassador will stay as the guest of the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl at Government House, and will attend a dinner hosted by the Deputy Bailiff, William Bailhache. He will also attend meetings at Jersey Finance Limited and the Jersey Financial Services Commission and visit the Jersey War Tunnels and the coin hoard exhibition at the Jersey Museum.
