Rozel house fire

21 February 2014

A 19-year-old man climbed out a window to escape a house fire in Rozel earlier today (Friday 21 February).

The man who escaped from the house had been woken this morning by a smoke alarm but could not leave his bedroom because of the fire. Two gardeners who were working outside heard him shout and helped him escape using ladders.

The first firefighters arrived at the scene at about 10.50am and worked to suppress the intense blaze which, at its height, was tackled by eight firefighters. Group Commander Martin Allix said their work prevented the fire from spreading through the whole property.

Group Commander Allix said that there was no doubt that the smoke alarm saved the man's life and he commended the gardeners for their swift action in helping the young man escape.
