Minister approves Springfield 3G pitch

24 June 2014

Plans to install an artificial 3G pitch at Springfield Stadium have been approved by Jersey’s Planning Minister.

The application was approved following a site visit by the Minister for Planning and Environment, Deputy Rob Duhamel, and the approval is subject to several planning conditions and other changes to the original plans.

Community park

The original plans were rejected by the Planning Applications Panel last month on the grounds of the scale and extent of proposed changes to the surrounding community park and the fact that there had been too little community consultation.

However, because the department had recommended approval for the application, the proposal was referred to Deputy Duhamel for a final decision.

Changes to the plans

Deputy Duhamel visited the site with the planning case officer and they met the applicant and some of those concerned with the proposal. The Minister subsequently asked for changes to the plans, specifically to the play area, car parking area and landscaping.

Deputy Duhamel said: “With the changes agreed I am confident that Springfield Stadium will continue to offer an important community facility while catering for the changing needs of our sporting public. The creation of a 3G pitch will extend the stadium’s use for a wide variety of community, sporting and schools users and for the NatWest Island Games XVI – Jersey 2015.”

The planning conditions include:

- Controlling hours of use of the 3G pitch
- Additional landscaping and planting
- Only allowing the car park to be used by users of Springfield centre
- Improving the car park access
- Improving delivery access.
