Grouville slurry spill

​Work to clear up and limit the damage caused by a spill of farm slurry at Grouville continues.

Shortly before 10am on Tuesday 13 January 2015, a slurry tank used by Gold Leaf farm, on land at Le Prés Manor, near Grouville marsh, ruptured resulting in the sudden release of up to 900m3 of slurry.

The slurry reached the outfall near the Beach Hotel, Grouville Bay. Signs have been erected in the area asking people to avoid this stretch of the beach and sea. Oyster farmers have also been made aware of the pollution incident and will continue to be kept informed. 

Environmental Protection officers from the Department of the Environment helped with the clean-up at the farm.

As part of the clean-up operation and to limit any further environmental impact to the stream and marsh, the Department may consider a controlled release of water from Queen’s Valley Reservoir. If it were done, it would be carried out immediately after a high tide so that any remaining slurry is washed out to sea.

The Department of the Environment will continue to monitor the situation and officers are investigating the incident under the Water Pollution Law.
