Customs seize £370,000 of heroin

24 March 2015

Customs and Immigration have seized drugs with a local street value of more than a third of a million pounds in two separate operations.

It brings the local street value of drugs the Customs and Immigration Service has seized this year to nearly a million pounds (£992,223).

Last Thursday (19 March) two men were arrested following the discovery of £120,000 worth of heroin from a guest house in St Helier.

The two men, both UK residents, appeared in the Magistrates Court on Friday (20 March) and were charged with importing the heroin into Jersey.

In a separate operation on Saturday (21 March) officers searched a property in St Helier and found heroin with a local street value of approximately £250,000. A 21-year-old local resident was arrested and charged with possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Director of Law Enforcement for Customs and Immigration, Mark Cockerham, said “It’s been a busy first quarter in 2015 at the borders, with a variety of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, psychoactive substances and cannabis, being encountered through a variety of methods. The recent heroin seizures are significant in that they will have prevented widespread distribution within the Island.”

If you have any information about drug smuggling, you can call the Customs drugs freephone on 0800 735 5555 and speak to a Customs officer in complete confidence.
