Teaming up for sports course

​Representatives from the island’s sports industry have collaborated with Highlands College to design a new sports course.

University College Jersey, the Higher Education Department at Highlands, is launching a Higher National Diploma in Sport starting in September 2019. Applications for a place on the course, which is subject to validation, open in January. It is equivalent to two years of higher education, and students will have the option to top up to a full honours degree.

The course has been designed with some of the key members of Jersey’s sport and physical activity scene including Jersey Sport, Jersey Football Association and Jersey Reds. Students will carry out work experience with these organisations, and will study a range of units including Anatomy and Physiology, Outdoor Learning, Nutrition, Physical Literacy, Leisure Management and Entrepreneurism in Sport.

During a student’s time on the course, they will also pick a subject to complement their degree and improve their employability, such as Coaching or Active Referral, and they will have the opportunity to complete relevant courses such as coaching awards, CMI management courses or training for fitness instruction or personal training.

Jersey Sport’s Chief Executive Officer, Catriona McAllister, said: “Jersey Sport is currently developing a new strategy, and to succeed in making Jersey a more active island it will require a well-trained and skilled workforce to deliver the ambitions of the strategy and to support islanders to be more active every day. As an organisation, we are committed to employing islanders where the skills exist and this course will help create a sporting workforce for years to come.”

Ben Bennett, Head of Higher Education at University College Jersey, said: “Our goal is to produce students that have a wealth of experience in the sport, fitness and health industry along with industry-recognised qualifications to ensure the best possible start to their career paths.”
