Applications invited for new civil celebrants

14 September 2018

The Superintendent Registrar is inviting applications from people wanting to become independent civil celebrants. Under the amended Marriage Law, independent celebrants, who are authorised by the Superintendent Registrar, will be able to solemnise civil marriages in the Island.

Anyone wishing to apply must demonstrate that they have the right skills and knowledge. They must be confident and engaging public speakers, be able to develop an understanding of Jersey’s marriage laws and understand the solemnity and importance of a marriage ceremony.

Claire Follain, Superintendent Registrar, said: “This is a unique opportunity to take on a varied and interesting role. We want couples who are getting married in Jersey to be able choose their own civil celebrant, knowing that the celebrant will have the skills, knowledge and commitment to deliver a wonderful wedding ceremony in accordance with the law."

The newly authorised civil celebrants will be self-employed but will be inspected and regulated by the Superintendent Registrar. It is against the law to solemnize a marriage in Jersey unless authorised by the Superintendent Registrar.

Training for shortlisted applicants will take place in December following an interview process.

Applicants should submit an application form available here along with their CV and a covering letter, explaining why they wish to apply for the role to, the closing date is Wednesday 3 October 2018.

Alternatively applications can be posted to: Claire Follain, Superintendent Registrar, Office of the Superintendent Registrar, 10 Royal Square, St Helier JE2 4WA
