Islanders turning 18 years old can get their first dose

Islanders turning 18 years old within three months' time are now eligible to get their first dose of the vaccine to protect them against Covid-19. This follows last week's announcement from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI)

Work is currently underway to offer vaccinations for the remaining select groups which were advised by the JCVI and more information will be available in due course.

Islanders turning 18 are invited to attend the walk-in appointments at the vaccination centre or book an appointment online or via the helpline. Islanders must remember to bring their ID to their first vaccination. The walk-in appointments will run until this Sunday, 1 August, between 5 and 6pm on weekdays, and between 8.30 and 3.30pm on the weekend.

The latest statistics as at Sunday 25 July show that 76% of adult Islanders aged 18 years and over are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 85% have had at least one dose.

Other key statistics:

  • 85% of over 30 year olds are fully vaccinated
  • 95% of over 50 year olds are fully vaccinated
  • 62% of 18-29 year olds have had one dose of the vaccine

Head of the Vaccination Programme, Becky Sherrington, said: "The walk-in appointments have been really successful already, so far this week we have seen over 100 Islanders walking in for their first dose. I am pleased that we will now be able to offer first doses to Islanders who are turning 18 within three months, and I hope those Islanders come to the vaccination centre this week with their friends and make use of the walk-in appointments available.

"Just over three quarters of the Island's adult population are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 which is great to see. By getting your first dose, Islanders are on the journey to being fully vaccinated, and are giving themselves, their friends, and family, good protection against the virus."

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Richard Renouf, said: "I am pleased that we are able to offer vaccines to Islanders turning 18, following recommendations from the JCVI. We are seeing transmission of the virus spread particularly among young Islanders now, so it is important that those Islanders in the younger priority groups who have not yet been vaccinated, get their first dose as soon as possible.

"I'd like to thank the vaccination programme for their continued hard work and opening up the vaccine centre for walk in appointments this week. I encourage Islanders to continue supporting the programme and make use of the convenient walk in appointments."

If Islanders wanting to receive their first dose cannot attend the walk-in times, they are still able to book their first dose online or via the helpline to ensure they are guaranteed a vaccine at their chosen allocated time and day.
