Event to celebrate equality

An outdoor event, inviting guests from women’s and equality organisations in Jersey is planned take place in mid-April, in line with Government guidelines and restrictions. The exact date of the event is yet to be confirmed.

The event will be broadcast online through social media for Islanders to join virtually. It is currently set to include: a premiere of the ‘Women and Jersey’ video highlighting the importance of CEDAW, an introduction from the Minister of International Development, Deputy Carolyn Labey, and a panel discussion on the roles of women in the Island and how to ensure women have equal opportunity. 

CEDAW is one of the core United Nations (UN) Human Rights treaties and promotes the rights of women and girls to be treated equally around the world.

Jersey’s Discrimination Law has a person’s sex as a protected characteristic, and is a key piece of legislation that has enabled the UK to extend the treaty to Jersey. 

Minister for International Development, Deputy Carolyn Labey, said: “This is a great milestone and Jersey is not only demonstrating that it can already comply with its treaty obligations, but is also making a public commitment to work towards further reducing discrimination against women and girls.

“As one of the core treaties, this extension is an important step in ensuring women are seen as equal members of our society.”
