Consultation on new statistics legislation

25 October 2021

Proposals for a new legislative framework for statistics in Jersey has been published today for public consultation.

The Statistics Legislation Steering Group was established by the Chief Minister earlier this year, to oversee the development of policy and legislation to enhance and improve Jersey's national statistics system.

Following a period of focused work, the steering group has developed amendments to the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018 after consulting with producers and users of official statistics.

Chair of the Steering group, Deputy Kirsten Morel said: "It is important to ensure public trust and confidence in the quality, relevance and integrity of statistics produced by Statistics Jersey and other public authorities in the Island.

"The steering group has examined international guidance and best practice on matters related to production of statistics and has looked at legislation in other jurisdictions, including those that are comparable in complexity and size to Jersey.

"I would like to thank the steering group for their time and commitment. We have collectively produced a vision for a National Statistical System in Jersey which accords with international guidance and best practice standards."

The consultation is open to comments from the public and all professional stakeholders, including users and producers of statistics in Jersey.

The deadline for comments is Monday 6 December 2021.

Full details on the consultation, including the Vision Paper can be found here.

Responses can be sent via email to statisticslaw@gov.je or by post to Statistics Law Consultation, Strategic Policy, Performance and Population, Government of Jersey, 19 to 21 Broad Street, St Helier, JE2 3RR.
