La Motte Street road closure for public realm work

19 April 2023

La Motte Street will be the first part of town to see improvements as part of the Government’s Public Realm Movement Strategy to make town a better place for walking, cycling, and spending time in.

The improvements to La Motte Street should make it easier for Islanders to walk along, as well as providing an onward link from the Hill Street contraflow cycle route.

The work is being split into two phases – Phase One will be between the Hilary Street and St Saviour’s Road junctions. It will involve surface water drainage improvements, street lighting improvements, footway paving, and carriageway resurfacing.

Phase One is due to begin on Monday 24 April, and will initially require La Motte Street to be closed to through-traffic for seven weeks. The road will then reopen to through-traffic during the footway paving work.

Pedestrian access to all premises, including Customer and Local Services and Revenue Jersey, will remain at all times. Vehicles will continue to be able to drive in and out of Berkshire Court garage, and to the disabled parking bays on Hilary Street.

A signed diversion for through-traffic will be in place, and the bus stop on La Motte Street will be suspended while the road is closed. The bus stop on Grenville Street will be the next nearest bus stop.

Phase Two, which will involve major public realm improvements between the Hill Street and Hilary Street junctions, is currently being designed and can only begin once Phase One is complete. For the full schedule, visit the  La Motte Street public realm improvements page. Dates of the planned work may adjust depending on the weather.

Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Tom Binet, said: “La Motte Street has suffered from unstructured parking and drop off, causing problems for buses using the street, and risks to pedestrians trying to cross the road between vehicles stopped in undesignated areas.

“A programme of improvements for the development of St Helier’s public realm is being developed, and I’m pleased to say La Motte Street is among the first schemes to get going.

“A large part of the first phase of work will require the road to be closed to through-traffic and I apologise to anyone who will be inconvenienced. Pedestrian access will remain throughout the work, and Customer and Local Services and Revenue Jersey will remain open as usual.”
