Why we list geological sites
It's important to list geological sites to provide legal recognition of a place’s significance to Jersey’s geological profile. This is to ensure that the essential geological quality of the place is protected through the planning system to make sure that it can be enjoyed by future generations.
Geological sites of special interest
A sites unique geological qualities may contribute to it being listed as sites of special interest.
The Minister for the Environment has set out the criteria that are used to decide whether places are of special geological interest.
Heritage buildings or places
Buildings and places can also be listed for their heritage value which could be based on historical, architectural, archaeological, or cultural significance. For more information including the different grading system, please see the following webpage.
