Nursing and midwifery jobs and careers: about working in Jersey

Our hospitals

We provide a vast range of health and social care services that are split over 3 different sites in the Island:

  • Jersey General Hospital Acute Services in St Helier
  • Community and Social Services in St Helier
  • Mental Health Services in St Saviour

Nurses' pay and leave

Nurses' pay grades in Jersey mirror the UK Agenda for Change band (Band 5 UK = Grade 4 Jersey). The structure is similar to the original UK Whitley scale.

Annual leave entitlement for registered nurses is 5 weeks and 3 days plus 8 or 9 bank holidays (depending on whether Liberation Day falls on a week day).

Nurses' pensions

You can transfer your UK pension up to 5 years after taking up a nursing post in Jersey. This will also give you preferential rates compared with the UK.

Professional registration

All nurses and midwives must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council UK (NMC) and registered locally with the Jersey Care Commission to comply with Jersey law. Your registration must be renewed every year, which is free. Our Human Resources Department will support you with your initial registration as part of the recruitment and selection process. The statutory responsibility to remain professional accountable via both NMC and Jersey Care Commission registration at all times is your own.

The NMC website provides clear guidance o​n the registration process for European and non European applicants. You may be required to work temporarily in the UK to access the NMC UK register at first.

Visa and employment

You must have a full UK work visa to be employed in Jersey and you have to work full time for the first 5 years of your residency (exceptions may be made in certain circumstances for a maximum of 3 months).

Continued professional development (CPD)

We have an excellent in-house education centre providing a vast range of programmes for CPD for all grades of staff.

We offer an extended 12 ​month supervised period to support staff with the transition from student to staff nurse, and develop flexible and transferable skills across the workforce.

As part of the recruitment process, anyone that wishes to work for Health and Community Services must complete an occupational infection control assessment.
