Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 31 May 2017.

Please provide the total AWPU budget allocated to all states funded schools for the financial years 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Please confirm the total actual spend for each school against the original budgets highlighting any overspend incurred by individual schools again for each year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

The following table summarises public money spent in each of the years from 2012 to 2016 for all states funded schools in Jersey:

Original AWPU budgets for 2012 to 2016

The table below shows the actual spend per school in each of the five financial years:

Actual Spend 2012 to 2016

The following table shows the variance against the original budget:

Variance to Original Budget 2012 to 2016

The Education Department does not use actual spend against original budget because this does not provide an accurate measure. School budgets can change significantly throughout the year for a variety of reasons including carry forwards, backdated pay awards, the Jersey Premium initiative and IT strategy allocations.

Schools are allowed to carry forward underspends and overspends in order to manage their finances effectively. This is necessary because of the mismatch between the academic year and financial year, which has a direct impact on the annual budget management of each individual school.

Consequently any underspends and overspends reported for an individual year do not reflect the medium term financial budget management of a school.
