Accommodation for homeless islanders (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 21 October 2020.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please could the Government break down:
The amount paid to hotels for winter lets to give free rooms to homeless islanders, broken down separately and by month for 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Response

Assistance with housing costs is available to people who are eligible for Income Support.
There is no statutory definition of homelessness and people who are eligible for Income Support may have a range of housing needs and circumstances.
The housing component of Income Support is provided at a standard rate based on property type:
How your Income Support benefit is made up
A person who rents a single room is eligible for a ‘lodgings’ or ‘bedsit’ rate of up to £142.52 a week. Jersey has a variety of accommodation available and some people may negotiate winter-let or other temporary occupation such as in a hotel or guest house.
The Government does not hold information on the number of housing components recorded as ‘bedsit’ or ‘lodgings’ that are paid to people living in hotels or guest houses specifically.
