What is Liberation Day

Each year, Jersey marks the anniversary of Jersey’s liberation from German occupation during the Second World War.

The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied and were viewed by Hitler as one of the stepping-stones to the full invasion of mainland Britain.

2024 schedule of events

Celebrations will be held on Thursday 9 May ​​2024.

From 9am

Formation of marching contingents in the Royal Square.

From 10.15am

Procession of marching contingents to Liberation Square.

10.30am

A special sitting of the States Assembly will commence and feature an address from the Bailiff as Presiding Officer, along with the Chief Minister.

10.50am

Procession to Liberation Square by States Members, Crown Officers and Clergy.

11.05am

Welcome and address by Sir Timothy Le Cocq, Bailiff of Jersey followed by a Service of thanksgiving given by The Dean of Jersey, The Very Reverend Mike Keirle.

This will be followed by:

  • re-enactment of Force 135 arrival
  • Beautiful Jersey, sung by Rebecca Arthurs of Musical Originals
  • the National Anthem

Music will be provided by The Band of the Island of Jersey and La Ronde Concert Band.

12pm

March past and motorcade.

12.15pm

End of the ceremonial events.

From 12.15pm

Festivities for the whole family will start when the ceremonial events are finished in Liberation Square. The stage in Weighbridge Place will come alive with a variety of local entertainers.

You'll be able to buy refreshments and local produce at various stalls surrounding the stage.

5.30pm

End of the festivities.
