Stranded fisherman rescued at La Hocq

02 July 2012

The man was cut off by the incoming tide around half a mile from the shore and the inshore rescue boat was launched from La Hocq slip. He was safely retrieved with a few minutes to spare before the rocks on which he had climbed disappeared under the rising tide.

The man, who used his mobile phone to contact the emergency services, was taken to shore unharmed.

The Fire and Rescue Service is advising anyone who goes low water fishing to tell someone where they are going and when they are due to return. You should wear bright clothing and check the weather and tides before you set off.

If you are cut off by tide, the advice is to remain calm and get as high up any rocks as you can safely, then contact the emergency services. It is not advisable to try to swim to safety as the tides and currents around Jersey's coast are very strong and you are likely to be swept away.
