Jersey Library Commemorates First World War

04 August 2014

The Jersey Library Service will be marking the centenary of First World War with a series of events designed to give the local community opportunities to reflect on the past and discover more about the history of the conflict.

Maps of military operations and books based on official documents will be displayed on the first floor of the Town Library throughout the four-year long commemoration, charting key events of the Great War.

Starting this month the library service will be working in partnership with the Jersey Privateers Gaming Club to reenact major engagements from the conflict, helping library customers to learn about the tactics used by different armies. On Saturday 9 August from 10 am a demonstration game will be held in the Town Library. Admission to this event is free and there is no need to reserve a place.

Islanders are also being invited to submit their artistic interpretations of poppies to an art competition that the library will be running over the next few months. Entries can be submitted under one of three categories:

  • art
  • textiles
  • 3D (collage and sculpture)

The closing date for entries is Friday 10 October.

These activities mark just the start of a range of events Jersey Library has planned to commemorate the Great War. Further details will be released as the centenary progresses.

For more information on these and other events please call or email the Chief Librarian or find us on Facebook.
