Job market boosted by Back to Work parents

15 September 2017

Local employers are being asked to contact Social Security’s Back to Work team if they have part-time vacancies, particularly ones which can fit around school hours. This is to fulfil demand for over 100 parents who are claiming Income Support and are returning to work because their youngest child is starting nursery.

Parents returning to work

In the past few weeks, Back to Work advisors have met 107 mums and dads who are now looking for jobs to help them get back into the work place. In addition, there are a further 27 parents who need to increase their working hours because their youngest is moving from nursery up to school. Many of these have extensive experience, qualifications and are enthusiastic and capable. All of the parents are Entitled or Entitled to Work.

Support for parents

Back to Work provides support for these parents to refresh their skills and develop new ones, alongside one-to-one mentoring with a Back to Work advisor. In partnership with employers, this support continues for up to six months after they start work to ensure a smooth transition back into the workplace.

Deputy Graham Truscott, Social Security Assistant Minister, said: “September and October provide a unique opportunity for employers to discover this wealth of new talent returning to the job market. Past candidates have found work in many different sectors including hospitality, retail, catering, finance, IT, construction, administration and marketing. Therefore, if they have potential roles, I would urge local employers to contact Back to Work Recruitment as soon as possible.”

In the past two years Back to Work has helped over 260 parents return to work when their youngest child has started nursery or school. Many of these have found long-term, sustainable employment and have moved towards financial independence.
