Local sports teams support UCJ students

06 May 2021

From this September two of Jersey’s elite sports teams will provide a financial boost for students at University College Jersey (UCJ).

Jersey Bulls F.C and Jersey Reds are providing four bursaries, worth £500 each, to support students’ sporting achievements and enhance their learning. To be eligible, students must be:
  • Studying for a Higher Education qualification at UCJ in the 2021-2022 academic year
  • Affiliated with either Jersey Bulls or Jersey Reds, whether that be as a coach, volunteering, a player, officiator, or on a placement

Both clubs already support students at UCJ and Highlands College by delivering masterclasses, guest lectures and visits to students on the Higher National Diploma in Sport. They also offer work experience to students.

Applications will open in September 2021, and students will need to complete an application form and a personal statement to be considered.

In a joint statement, Jersey Reds and Jersey Bulls said: “We’re committed to supporting the wider community and Island life, so we’re proud to be providing sponsorship support for four UCJ students.

“We’ve already developed a good relationship with UCJ and Highlands College, by providing placements and work experience for their students, and we’re really pleased to be taking this a step further.”

Andrew McGinnigle, Deputy Head of University College Jersey, said: “Jersey Bulls and Jersey Reds have been supportive of our students for a number of years, and we’re pleased to be working alongside them to transform the lives of students through these flexible, student-focused bursaries.

“Students could – for example – use the funds to pay for additional professional development courses such as coaching badges and strength and conditioning, or for equipment and enhanced resources to assist their academic studies.

“We hope these generous bursaries – and the accompanying offer of a work placement – will encourage more young people to access higher level study.”

The application window for courses starting at UCJ in September 2021 is currently open and will close at 5pm on Friday 14 May 2021.
