Jersey Retinal Diabetic screening programme

23 September 2021

Health and Community Services is encouraging diabetic Islanders to look after their eyes this National Eye Health Week.

The Jersey Diabetic Retinal Screening programme is running a complete programme including two surveillance clinics enabling effective monitoring of Islanders with optical problems due to diabetes.

The programme includes the running of two surveillance clinics which allows effective monitoring of Islanders with optical problems due to diabetes.

The Retinal Screening Clinic, which was opened earlier this year by the late Alain du Chemin, includes a retinal screening camera, kindly donated by Diabetes Jersey, an OCT scanner, which allows a more detailed 3D assessment of the health of eyes, and a slit lamp, a powerful microscope with a light that enables opticians to take closer looks at the different structures in the eye to detect diseases. The slit lamp was purchased following a generous donation from the late Alain du Chemin.

Screening Programmes Lead, Sarah Evans, said: "We are excited that we are in a position to run a complete programme at the screening clinic. We are increasing the number of routine digital screening slots until the end of the year. We hope to welcome diabetic Islanders that need retinal screening, to our clinics in the near future."

Islanders who want to book appointments or have any questions can contact Sarah Evans at sa.evans@health.gov.je or call the Jersey Diabetes Service on 444599.
