Applications now open for Child Nursing students

07 April 2021

Local students on the Bachelor of Nursing Child Field (Honours) degree will now be able to carry out their essential practice placements, at home in Jersey, when the course starts in September 2021.

Following Jersey's successful endorsement by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the University of Chester has partnered with Health and Community Services (HCS) to offer the child nursing placements in Jersey.

Nursing practice is 50% of the course which students will be able to complete within a range of Jersey healthcare settings. Students will travel to the University of Chester for the theoretical modules which makes up the other 50% of the course.

After graduating from the three-year programme, the students will become Registered Nurses (Child Field) on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register, and the graduates will be given a full-time position as a staff nurse at Jersey's General hospital.

Head of Nursing, Midwifery, and Allied Health Professional Education, Julie Mesny said: "The partnership with the University of Chester is an excellent opportunity for local students to carry out their essential work placements on-Island. Upon successful completion of the course, they will be provided with full-time roles as staff nurses for children. This is a fantastic opportunity for Health and Community services and an example of nurturing our home-grown talent.

"The work of a children's nurse can vary greatly, from caring for a sick new-born baby to caring for teenagers who might have complex physical or mental health needs. It is an important and very fulfilling profession. We look forward to welcoming local students within HCS, to put into practice all the skills and theory that they will learn on the course."
