Online maths tuition for Covid recovery

05 July 2022

All students at Government schools will be able to access tailored online maths tuition, following a new partnership between the Government of Jersey and Complete Maths.

The two-year arrangement has been funded through the COVID Recovery Catch-up Fund, and will allow students to access TUTOR - an online tuition programme. TUTOR can be used by all students from Year 1 to Year 12, but is particularly intended to support students whose learning was negatively affected by COVID-19.

Students can access TUTOR in the classroom (with the support of teaching staff) or independently at home. Parents and teaching assistants can oversee  learners' activities, and parents can also learn maths with their children.

TUTOR provides diagnostic tests to make sure students are accessing material at the appropriate level. The platform encourages students to keep learning by giving them experience points and awards, based on how they use the programme.

To celebrate the rollout of TUTOR, staff from Complete Maths visited Jersey on 4 July to see the programme being used in schools, and to talk to teaching staff about the impact the programme is having.

Séan O' Regan, Director of Education, said: "We know that COVID-19 is having an ongoing impact on students' learning, and we have already launched a range of additional support for students and staff, including small-group tutoring and additional training.

"TUTOR will be a valuable addition to our toolkit. It will allow individual students to take part in tailored, self-directed learning to support the areas where they need to develop. It will also enable teaching staff to remain focused on whole-class and small-group teaching."

Background

Complete Mathematics was founded in 2013 to support teachers of maths through conferences and an online CPD platform. In 2021, Complete Maths launched trials of TUTOR, its 'digital tutor' product, which uses intelligent technologies and high-quality content to offer online tuition.
