About the campaign

It’s Not Okay is a campaign against street harassment. It aims to raise awareness on what street harassment means and how to stop it.

We want everyone to feel safe to challenge others’ behaviour but also think about their own.

Stopping street harassment starts with understanding how your behaviour can impact others.

It’s Not Okay is part of the Government of Jersey’s ongoing work to address violence against women and girls (VAWG).

What is street harassment

Street harassment can be any unwanted remarks or actions made towards someone in a public space that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

It can be:

  • catcalling or wolf-whistling
  • unwanted sexually explicit remarks
  • unwanted touching or groping
  • staring or leering
  • following or stalking
  • invading someone’s personal space or blocking their movement
  • upskirting or down-blousing

Harassment can happen to anyone, but it affects far more women, especially young women and teenage girls.

The terms street harassment and sexual harassment are often used in place of each other. However, street harassment is not always sexually motivated or based on a person’s sex.
