Listed buildings, sites and structures (permissions)

Planning permission

If you want to carry out work to a listed building, site or structure it is very likely that you will require planning permission.  There are even some restrictions on what you can do to the interior of a listed building depending on the level of grading attached to it.

For instance properties that are graded as Sites of Special Interest require planning permission for nearly all internal alterations, including restoration and repair of special features, such as fire places, staircases and ornamental ceilings.

Building permission

Building work carried out to any building, whether it is listed or not, will always need to meet the relevant technical requirements under the building regulations. You will need to check if building permission is required for the specific type of work you wish to undertake.
