Children's nursing is a 3 year full-time course that prepares you for caring for children with a variety of health and social care needs, in their home, in community settings and in hospital.
Course overview
The programme is full-time over 3 years and equates to 4,600 hours. 50% of these hours are theory based and 50% are in clinical practice. Theory modules centre around common themes:
- anatomy, physiology and pharmacology
- health and wellbeing
- practice learning
- skills acquisition
- professionalism and leadership
During clinical practice, you work day, night, weekday and weekend shifts. You can experience placements in the following settings:
- hospital care
- specialist care
- community care
Assessments
Assessments are varied and may include:
- essays
- presentations
- multiple-choice papers
- clinical examination
- written examinations and projects
Practice is assessed by qualified practitioners, known as supervisors and assessors, in the clinical learning environment.

Most Universities accept a maximum of 8 points from GCE AS Levels. The Welsh Baccalaureate and General Studies A Levels are also recognised.
If academic credits are European or International, you can get advice from National Rehabilitation Information Centre, who will verify your qualifications. NVQ Level 3 does not meet the entry requirements for a nursing degree.
You are also assessed for fitness to practice and need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) police check.
Residential status
Before starting the degree programme, you need to be either:
- resident in Jersey for 5 years
- living in Jersey on a licence
This is in line with requirements set by student finance.
Pay and costs
There are fees payable to the partnering UK University for admission onto a children's nursing degree as well as travel and accommodation costs. You are not paid a wage whilst training.
On successful completion of the course, you receive a baccalaureate nursing degree from the partnering University and are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Child Field).
