Nurses and midwives experiences of moving to Jersey

Mandy Hutchings, Midwife in Maternity

"I visited Jersey for a long weekend last July and immediately felt it was somewhere I would enjoy living. I applied for a vacancy as a midwife the following week and returned for an interview a couple of weeks later. After working my three months notice, I was in post within 15 weeks of my first visit.

"The actual moving to the Island to work process seems quite complex at first, but it was straight forward enough. I found the HR Department very helpful and the staff very welcoming.

"I moved to Jersey as a mature single person and have made lots of new friends. There are plenty of lovely places to dine out, not to mention the beautiful beaches and wonderful countryside. I'm only a short flight from my family back on the mainland and have also had lots of people wanting to visit me here, especially when the sun is shining!

"The whole lifestyle here is very different, but in a positive way. The work / life balance is much easier to achieve. For me, moving to Jersey has been nothing but positive!"

Clare Ryder, CPN / Liaison Nurse in Adult Community Mental Health

"The move to Jersey for my family and I has been an extremely positive one. It’s been straight forward with all the encouragement, advice and support we received from colleagues within the mental health team.

"Practicing as a Community Mental Health Nurse on the Island is so different from my former experience of working in an NHS Trust. I have been overwhelmed by the level of person centered care the service is able to offer - you really are able to feel satisfaction in making a difference to those individuals experiencing mental health difficulties. The service is welcoming, respective to any suggestions offered to possibly shape the service, and strives to enable staff to function at their optimum.

"Along with the professional rewards gained from the move, I experience constant reminders of the personal gains for my family. These continue to make me smile – my drive home along the beautiful coast, the days on the beach with the children engaged in swimming and water sports, and my pride in seeing the confidence and achievements of the girls as they continue to settle into their new schools."

Debbie Archer, Specialist Nurse in Sexual Health

"For me, moving to Jersey has been a very positive move both professionally and personally. Being non-NHS, working in health is very different from the UK, but it’s given me new and exciting learning opportunities and challenges. The education department and support here really is second-to-none. Leisure-wise, for a small Island there’s loads on offer - from every water sport imaginable to evenings of music and entertainment at the Jersey Opera House.

"During the summer months the Island really comes to life, with easily accessible beautiful beaches and lots of organised events. There are plenty of restaurants on the Island serving wonderful food, especially the local fresh fish.

"For a change of scenery and a great day out the other Channel Islands and France are only an hour's boat ride away and home is only a short flight for those moments when you are missing your family and friends. The cost of living in Jersey is greater than in the UK, but I feel the way of life on the Island definitely outweighs this."

Emily Malone, Staff Nurse in Emergency Assessment Unit

"Whilst at first glance Jersey appears to be a small island, I’ve found that there is a lot to be uncovered here. I enjoy the delights of Jersey's many restaurants and bars and find that in my free time I always have something to do or somewhere to go. I’ve been living here for just over six months now, and feel that I have only just begun to brush the surface.

“The hospital environment is homely and friendly yet retains very high standards of practice and patient care. I’ve had many great learning experiences and opportunities to expand upon the knowledge I acquired prior to coming to the Island. I certainly feel supported by other staff here, and thoroughly enjoy being a nurse in Jersey."
