Mental Health nursing degree programme: Pre-registration

This 3 year full-time course prepares you for caring for people of all ages with a variety of mental health and social care needs both in their home and in hospital.

The course is provided on-Island by a team of nursing lecturers with a range of clinical, academic and research expertise.

Course overview

The programme is full-time over 3 years and equates to 4,600 hours. 50% of these hours are theory based and 50% are in clinical practice. Theory modules centre around 5 key themes:

• anatomy, physiology and pharmacology
• health and wellbeing
• practice learning
• skills acquisition
• professionalism and leadership

During clinical practice, you work day, night, weekday and weekend shifts. You can experience placements in the following settings:

• acute mental health care
• community mental health care
  
• emergency care
• specialist mental health care
• elderly care
• child and adolescent mental health
  

Work placements

You may also have the opportunity to plan a clinical placement of your choice, (even off-Island). In the past, students have organised placements in Jersey, for example, with the Paramedic team and also in Manchester, London and even Sri Lanka.

Assessments

Assessments are varied and may include:

• essays
• presentations
• multiple-choice papers
• clinical examinations
• written examinations and projects
  

Practice is assessed by qualified practitioners, known as supervisors and assessors, in the clinical environment.

Entry requirements

The typical entry requirements for a nursing course are:

A maximum of 8 points from GCE AS Levels are also accepted, as well as the Welsh Baccalaureate and General Studies A Levels.

If academic credits are European or International, you can get advice from National Rehabilitation Information Centre, who will verify your qualifications. NVQ Level 3 does not meet the entry requirements for the degree.

You are also assessed for fitness to practice and need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) police check.

Residential status

Before starting the degree programme, you need to be either:

• resident in Jersey for 5 years
• living in Jersey on a licence
  

This is in line with requirements set by student finance for financial support.

Pay and costs

There are no fees for the Mental Health Nursing Degree Programme in Jersey. You are not paid a wage whilst training. 

On successful completion of the course, you receive a baccalaureate nursing degree from the partnering University and are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health Field).
