Air quality monitoring

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s)

NO2 is measured in real time at Halkett Place and at 12 sites around the Island using passive diffusion tubes which are sent off monthly for analysis. Diffusion tubes are also used to measure four VOC’s at six other sites around the Island.

The results and analysis of this monitoring is published annually in a report by UK consultants Ricardo-AEA, see the Air Quality Monitoring in Jersey 2019.

Osiris units

Environmental Health operates 2 Osiris units which measure Particulate Matter in real time.

One is based at Halkett Place in St Helier and the other is at Howard Davis Park in St Helier. The data from these are shown in the graphs below. The data shown covers the latest 24 hours of reporting.

Halkett Place

Howard Davis Park

The Howard Davis Park Osiris particle unit is currently offline undergoing calibration in the UK.

This unit is a background monitor and is sited within the park so monitors particles from non-traffic sources such as sea salt, sand and biological moulds and spores which are larger than PM2.5s.

View further real-time air quality data monitoring at our monitoring sites on the AirQWeb website and on our air pollution monitoring website.

Download the AirQApp application that displays results from environment sensors that collect data on air quality information along with any external sensors such as pollutant gases and noise levels.

Air quality reports and documents

Environmental Health publishes analysis and discussion of the particulate monitoring program annually which can be found below along with our Air Quality Strategy, which sets out targets and objectives aimed at maintaining or improving the Air Quality on the Island and our Air Quality Project Plan which details more specifically what actions are planned over the coming year.

Historical monitoring

Jersey’s air quality outside the home is generally very good. We’ve been assessing and reporting on the quality of Island air since 1997 and annual reports are available
