Update on notification of major construction projects

15 September 2016

Under the new construction regulations which come into force on 1 October 2016, there is a legal requirement to notify us about all major construction projects.

A major construction project is one lasting more than 30 working days or 500 person days.

In practice, this means:

  • for projects in progress, where the construction phase started before 1 October 2016, there will be no need to retrospectively tell us about the project
  • for projects in progress, where the construction phase will start on or after 1 October 2016, the Health and Safety Project Co-ordinator (HSPC) must notify us 'as soon as is practicable'
  • for all future projects, the HSPC must notify us 'as soon as is practicable' after their appointment

The HSPC will be able to tell us about projects using the online form which will be available from 1 October.

Further details on the form and the notification process will follow shortly.

Regulation 9 of the new construction regulations sets out the information that's legally required to be notified to us; find out more below.
