Amendment to the ‘Work with Ionising Radiation: Approved Code of Practice’

04 August 2020

The use of ionising radiation at work in Jersey is currently governed by the ‘Work with Ionising Radiation: Approved Code of Practice’ (IR ACoP). Whilst the general principles of protecting people at work, both individually and collectively, against the detrimental effects of exposure to ionising radiation set out in the IR ACoP remain valid, the UK Regulations on which the ACoP was based were updated some time ago.

The key change resulted in a reduction in the dose limit for exposure to the lens of the eye. Whilst all Radiation Protection Advisors should have reviewed the changes in UK legislation and provided relevant advice on where these should be adopted as good practice, Appendix 3 of the IR ACoP has been amended to reflect the changes in the dose limit for exposure to the lens of the eye in a calendar year, as follows:

  • Employees of 18 years of age and above: the limit on equivalent dose for the lens of the eye shall be 20mSv in a calendar year
  • Trainees aged under 18 years: the limit on equivalent dose for the lens of the eye shall be 15mSv in a calendar year
