Health Access Scheme

About the Health Access Scheme

The Government and local GPs have worked together to create the Health Access Scheme. Under the scheme most appointments with a doctor or nurse in General Practice will be charged at fixed, low fees. Most services and treatments will be included in the scheme, so you'll know beforehand how much you have to pay for your care.

Who is covered in the Health Access Scheme

The Health Access Scheme covers:

After you start to receive Income Support or Pension Plus, you will be able to use the scheme from the 7th day of the next month. If your Income Support claim or Pension Plus claim ends, you will leave the scheme on the 7th day of the next month.

Practices may also make charges for repeat prescriptions.

Paying your general practice

Under the Health Access Scheme the cost of general practice services has been reduced and many other extra services are included in the fee. This will make it easier to budget for GP costs.

You are responsible for paying the fee and you remain responsible for any debts you have with your general practice.

Some general practices charge a fee for late payment. It's better to settle your bill when you have your appointment.

If you're charged the wrong price

If you think the practice has charged you the wrong price you should ask them for a breakdown of your bill. Some services are not covered by the scheme.

How to change GP practice

You may change your preferred practice at any time. Contact the practice you wish to join and ask for their registration form.
