T he Radiology Department provides imaging examinations to help diagnose and treat medical conditions. These examinations create images of the inside of the body, which help doctors plan and monitor your care.
We provide a range of services, including:
Most radiology examinations take place in the Radiology Department on the ground floor of the General Hospital. Some specialist examinations may be carried out in a different area of the hospital. Your appointment letter will always tell you where your examination will take place and how to find it.
Where to find us The Radiology Department is located on the ground floor of the General Hospital. To access the department, follow the signs for Radiology (X-ray) from the Parade entrance or the Gwyneth Huelin entrance.
The nearest public car park is Patriotic Street.

Our staff and service You may be cared for by a range of healthcare professionals during your visit to the Department.
Consultant radiologist
The doctor who reads the images and writes a report to send to your doctor.
They may also carry out special tests using X-rays or ultrasound.
They sometimes treat the problem you have.

What to expect at your appointment If you have a question about your appointment or can’t attend, contact the relevant service as soon as possible.
If you're unsure which service to contact, check the contact details in your appointment letter.
When you arrive for your appointment, follow the signs for the Reception a member of staff will check you in and direct you to the appropriate waiting area.

We aim to carry out examinations on time. Urgent and emergency cases may take priority and can sometimes cause delays. If this happens, we will keep you informed.
Preparing for your examination Some examinations need special preparation, such as fasting or drinking special fluids. Your appointment letter will explain what you need to do before you arrive.

What to wear
depending on the type of examination, you may have to change into a gown.
We'll show you a cubicle where you can get changed. There are free lockers for your clothes and other possessions.
It may be possible to wear your own clothes if you prefer. Avoid clothes with zips, metal clips or buttons as you may need to remove clothes containing metal.
Accessibility and language support We aim to make services accessible for all patients.
Accessibility Disabled toilet facilities are available within the Department.
Let us know in advance if you need additional support to attend your appointment.
Language support An interpreting service is available for languages including Polish, Portuguese, French and Romanian. C ontact us in advance so we can arrange this service for you.
If y ou have other communication or accessibility needs, use the contact details in your appointment letter so we can support you.
Fees and charges If a hospital consultant refers you to the Radiology Department you won’t be charged for your appointment.
If your GP, refers you, you’ll need to pay for your appointment when you arrive. We accept all forms of payment.

If you have a private appointment, you will be sent an invoice and private rates will apply.
Visitors and eligibility for treatment If you’ve recently moved to Jersey or are visiting the Island, you may be charged for treatment. Check your entitlement before your appointment. More information is available on Health costs when moving or returning to live in Jersey .
Children and young people We do not carry out radiology examinations on patients under the age of 16 unless a parent or guardian is present or has given consent, except in an emergency.
We do not have facilities to look after children who are not having an examination.
Safety of radiology examinations We follow all relevant legislation and safety standards for radiology examinations.
Equipment used in the Radiology Department is regularly checked to make sure it is safe for patients and staff. Radiation dose levels are monitored in line with UK standards.
