Animals we accept

The abattoir accepts your:

• cattle
• goats
• sheep
  
• pigs

If you bring cattle born before 1 August 1996 and the animal enters the lairage, it will be destroyed as Specified Risk Material (SRM).

Booking requests

You can make a booking using the abattoir booking form. We don't accept bookings by phone.

We must receive your booking request by 11am on the Wednesday before your requested week of slaughter. We cannot guarantee your booking if your request is received after.

Your booking confirmation will be sent to you either by email, fax or post.

Cancellations

Booking cancellations must be made by 12pm on the Monday before slaughter day. If the Monday is a bank holiday, your cancellation must be made by 12pm on the Friday before slaughter day.

Charges

Slaughter charges

You still have to pay full charges if:

• you don't attend your booking
• your meat has not been approved for human consumption
• some of your animals are not compliant for acceptance

Chiller space charges

Chiller space is limited and is not guaranteed.

Collections

Your dressed carcasses and offal will be ready to collect on Thursday between 6am and 10am, unless previously agreed.

Information on carcass collection times can be found on your booking confirmation.

If your carcass or offal is not collected on the collection date, you'll be charged for storage.

If you don't collect your carcasses or offal your meat may be destroyed.

Deliveries and transport

The abattoir has a clean livestock policy. You must make sure your animals and transport meet our requirements before arriving at the abattoir. We will not allow any dirty livestock to enter the abattoir or animals brought in dirty trailers.

Bulls

If your bull is over 10 months of age it must have a nose ring. If its horns have been removed your bull must also wear a halter or neck chain.

Any bulls you bring to the abattoir must be accompanied by 2 stockmen used to handling the animal.

Cattle (including steers)

The cattle (including steers) you bring to the abattoir must be:

• clean and dry
• fit to travel
  
• healthy
• free of drugs and adhering to the withdrawal periods

Your cattle must not be bedded on sawdust.

Sheep and goats

The sheep and goats you bring to the abattoir must be:

• clean and dry
• fit to travel
• healthy
• free of drugs

Your sheep and goats must not be bedded on sawdust or wood shavings.

Pigs

The pigs you bring to the abattoir must be:

• clean
• fit to travel
• healthy and free of drugs

Transport

All animals must be transported in a suitable trailer to avoid suffering in travel. You should not transport animals that are ill, infirm or lame.

Your trailer must:

• be clean before you load any livestock. Making sure there's no faeces from previous loads
• have sufficient bedding on the floor to minimise slipping of animals and animals getting dirty during travel. You must not use sawdust (cattle, sheep and goats) or wood shavings (sheep and goats)
• have suitable ramps, including tail gates, for safe loading and unloading of stock

Animals kept in a trailer must:

• have enough food and water
• have good ventilation
• not be exposed to extremes of temperature

Arriving and leaving the abattoir

Do not unload any animals until you're advised to do so.

Your load will be inspected to make sure:

• you're delivering the agreed number of animals
• your animals are in good general health and cleanliness
• your trailer is in good general cleanliness

You'll need to assist in unloading your animals and stay with them until they're penned within the lairage.

After unloading animals, the driver needs to:

• clean out the trailer of all debris
• pressure clean the trailer and vehicle
• disinfect the trailer and vehicle
