Safer travel for Grouville pupils

21 May 2015

Plans to make getting to and from Grouville school safer for children and to reduce traffic in the area have been agreed by Jersey’s Planning Applications Committee.

The Committee unanimously agreed plans submitted by the Department for Education, Sport and Culture to create a staff car park with 26 spaces on the site of the current school vegetable garden.

The proposal for the carpark, plus other changes to traffic arrangements around the school are part of a wider highways initiative to provide a safer environment for cycling, and pedestrian and school traffic.

In line with this, the Committee also agreed a further application to extend the Eastern Cycle Route Network in line with a Safer Routes to School initiative. The track will run through the Coastal National Park towards the school over scrubland and the golf course green.

Al fresco

The Committee also agreed to a proposal to widen the pavement in Halkett Place by two metres. The extended pavement, which runs alongside the Halkett pub, will be used for alfresco dining.

Parking spaces lost by the proposal will be reallocated. Two disabled parking spaces will be moved further up the street and an additional space for drivers without a disability will be provided in Cattle Street.

The plans meet the requirements of the Adopted Island Plan, 2011 (revised 2014).
