More bus shelters planned

Transport and Technical Services is planning to install six new bus shelters at various locations around the Island and is asking for Islanders comments.

The locations for the new bus shelters are:

  • Route Orange (north bound outside Le Clos Orange)
  • Grande Route de St Jean at Warwick Farm
  • Route des Quennevais, Airport Garages north-bound
  • Rue Don outside the Co-Op Red Houses store
  • Green Street south-bound outside The Limes
  • Route des Genets just west of Woodbine Corner adjacent to the former Rose  Farm camp site.

Improvements to the bus service are an important part of the Sustainable Transport Policy. This year, LibertyBus is providing a summer service with more routes and passenger seats than ever before. New routes have been introduced with two extra services linking the Airport to a wide range of destinations such as Corbiere, St Brelade’s Bay, and the villages in St Peter, St Ouen, St Mary and St John.

Bus capacity has been increased and LibertyBus have five more high-specification double deck vehicles operating on extra services to the west of the island as well as the established route 15. One of the new services is route 22 which runs between Corbiere and St Helier and will benefit from the proposed new shelter opposite Airport Garages at La Route des Quennevais.

Bus travel is becoming more popular as the service improves.  Last year passenger numbers had increased by nearly 11% compared to 2013 and the trend continues during 2015 with a rise of 6.7% up to the end of May over the same period in 2014.

TTS has been installing more shelters each year and more locations are currently being worked on.

Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for TTS said “I am really pleased we have identified these six new sites for shelters and I will be announcing more sites later in the year. I see them as important improvements for bus users.”
