St Mary village improvement scheme starts

Work to improve St Mary's village for pedestrians will begin on Wednesday (7 January), meaning some temporary traffic diversions and changes to bus stops. 

The improvements will include:

  • an off-road footpath alongside Verte Rue
  • the demarcation of village entry points
  • traffic-calming features outside the school, the pub, and the garage

Traffic-calming measures start

Work starts with the construction of a raised-table feature at the junction of Rue L’Église and La Route de St Marie. It will require a full closure of the junction, although the pub and church, as well as all nearby houses, will be accessible and diversions will be clearly signed.

While the work is underway, there will be a temporary bus stop in the parish car park (north of the cemetery) which will replace all the bus stops along the access-only roads. There will also be a temporary bus turning bay within the car park.

The Connétable of St Mary, Juliette Gallichan, said “I’m excited to see this project underway. The parish, with the assistance of Transport and Technical Services (TTS), has put a lot of thought into what needs to be done. I expect the scheme to substantially enhance our village identity."

Consultation with community

The work being done by TTS follows a consultation with parishioners, led by the community-based St Mary’s Village Improvement Board. The issues raised by residents have shaped the improvements, which are in keeping with the area.

The Minister for TTS, Deputy Eddie Noel, was instrumental in putting the funding in place for the village improvement schemes when he was Assistant Treasury Minister.

Partnership with other parishes

Deputy Noel said “TTS has worked with the Parish of St Mary to come up with designs that are both practical and will add to the character of the area. A fantastic job was done in St Aubin and St Mary can look forward to a much improved village area. We look forward to working in partnership with other parishes to develop similar schemes.”

TTS expect St Mary’s village improvements to continue for five or six months depending on the weather.
