Pop-up market for local entrepreneurs

12 May 2016

Local shoppers are being asked to support fifteen self-employed entrepreneurs who will be setting up for business in the Central Market, on Wednesday 18 May, for a one day Back to Work Pop-up Market.  All of these people have been working with specialist self-employment advisors within the Social Security Department’s Back to Work team to develop their businesses sufficiently to provide them with profitable employment.

Jersey Business Enterprise Week

This event has been organised to coincide with Jersey Business Enterprise Week 2016, which takes place between 13-20 May 2016.  It is an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to test out their business ideas and products in a real, busy and demanding environment.  There will be a diverse and exciting range of businesses taking part: a musician, two beauticians, a cake maker, a supplier of ceramic tiles, a car part retailer, two dog walkers, a company specialising in miniature woodwork collectables, a clothing supplier, a mindfulness and arts psychotherapist practitioner, a designer, a landscape gardener, a jeweller, a provider of quality party bags and gifts, and a cycle shop owner.

Business development training

The self-employment advisors in the Back to Work team support nearly 80 people who have a solid, thorough and viable business plan, and demonstrate that they have the energy, enthusiasm and commitment to manage working for themselves. Many of them have benefited from business development training designed to help them maximise their business ideas and make sure their enterprises are profitable and sustainable.  This training includes topics such as marketing and social media, cash flow and pricing, plus business planning.

Assistant Minister for Social Security, Deputy Graham Truscott, said “We are very grateful to the Central Market for its help and support setting up this exciting event.  All these energetic entrepreneurs have solid business cases and are passionate and dedicated; and, hopefully, the support provided by our experienced Back to Work team will give these start-up businesses the best possible chance to survive and grow.

“It is very important that we, as a community, support new business ventures – as these people will hopefully be the employers of tomorrow; so we are very excited to see what the Jersey public thinks of these business ideas.”
