New Director of Public Health appointed

21 April 2021

A new Director of Public Health has been appointed for Jersey.

Professor Peter Bradley, who currently works for Public Health England, will fill the statutory Medical Officer of Health role and will work closely with Jersey's Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr Ivan Muscat.

The Director of Public Health replaces the role of Medical Officer of Health, previously held by Dr Susan Turnbull. This will modernise the role, bringing it into line with the requirements of the British Faculty of Public Health. This change has also been made in the other Crown Dependencies.

Professor Bradley currently holds both the Chief Information Officer and Director of Health Intelligence roles at Public Health England, having left Public Health Wales in 2015.

In his new role, Professor Bradley  will be the principal independent adviser on all Public Health matters including health improvement, health protection, and health inequalities.

Professor Bradley said: "I'm delighted to be moving to Jersey to take on this exciting and challenging role.

"I'm looking forward to using my 17 years' experience working in public health to lead and advise on all public health matters for the Government of Jersey at this challenging time."

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Richard Renouf said: "Professor Peter Bradley will be an invaluable addition to the Strategic Policy, Planning and Performance department. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise and is ideally qualified to lead Public Health."

The process was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission and the British Faculty of Public Health.

On and off-Island candidates were targeted in the initial search and formally applied for the role, which produced a formal long-list of six candidates.

Recruitment was managed by the Government Resourcing Team and a specialist executive search firm, Penna.

Professor Bradley will take up his post in June 2021.
