Jersey Library plans for World Book Night

22 April 2021

Jersey Library will be hosting a number of activities on Friday 23 April as part of World Book Night.

Established in 2011 and now run by UK-based charity The Reading Agency, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the annual event which aims to inspire adults to read more.

The Library will be open until 9pm on Friday and Islanders are invited to join live-streamed talks with several guest authors including Kazuo Ishiguro and Kate Mosse.

Islanders are also encouraged to join readers across the British Isles in taking a moment to relax and enjoy a book or magazine during Reading Hour, which starts at 7pm.

Alongside this, free copies of Ask a Footballer by James Milner will be distributed by local groups including the Jersey FA, HMP La Moye, and the Jersey Bulls FC.

Director at Jersey Bulls FC, Ian Horswell said: "All of us at Jersey Bulls FC are delighted to be involved in this year's World Book Night and we're looking forward to giving out copies of this book to some of our loyal fans, as well as enjoying a few of the copies ourselves over Reading Hour."

The event includes:

  • 6pm-7pm- Conversation between Kazuo Ishiguro and Kate Mosse (live screening)
  • 7pm-8pm- Reading Hour
  • 8pm-9pm- Talk between Sandi Toksvig, authors David Nicholls, Bolu Babalola, and founder Jamie Byng (live screening)

Chief Librarian, Ed Jewell said: "We are excited to be able to support World Book Night this week and I would like to encourage all Islanders to pick up a book and join us in celebrating the tenth anniversary of this event. We will be open in town until 9pm for these exciting talks but booking is essential to ensure social distancing, so please call us on 01534 448700 if you would like to reserve a seat."
