Image guidelines

Why we use images on gov.je

We only use an image if:

  • it provides context to our content
  • there is a user need

Images tend to increase the page loading time. The site is designed to be mobile first in line with current browsing trends, so page load times are important to consider when creating content.

How to use images on gov.je

Make sure your image is:

  • a good quality sourced photo or graphic
  • sized correctly for the template, placeholder or page being used. Images should be no bigger than 4000px wide and 3000px high
  • a jpg file
  • licensed to use on gov.je
  • credited to a source if required. Place the credit as part of the image caption in the text of the page. We have to apply the credit in this way because if we include the credit as part of the image, there is a good chance it will be cropped by the renditions process
  • the full width or half the width of the main content column in a content page. Half width images can be aligned left, right or centred
  • in isolation with no text wrapped around it
  • tagged correctly
  • captioned if needed. This helps users understand the context of an image within a page

Departmental and campaign branding

Departmental and campaign branding is generally reserved for direct communication, for example, marketing material, letter headings, social media.

When to use vector images

gov.je uses vector images for logos and icons.

When to use raster and bitmap images

Bitmap images are used in .jpg format for page content.

Using good quality images and graphics

Sourcing the image

We use photographs taken by competent photographers and graphics supplied by a design agency.

An image should be at least 1920px wide to ensure quality and some future proofing as more devices start to use screen resolutions greater than 72dpi.

Storing the image

We use jpg images on gov.je.

If you use a lot of compression on a .jpg file to keep the file small, the quality may be too poor to use on gov.je.

Each image must be compressed and reviewed in its own right.

Licensing the image

All images used on gov.je are licensed correctly to avoid possible legal action.

Make sure your images and graphics are:

  • not taken from Google or a similar search engine
  • supplied by an image owner with written consent
  • online royalty free stock images if you can't provide your own image. Make sure any images used have the correct licence agreement for gov.je
  • credited to a photographer/supplier, if required. You must include the credit as part of the image caption
  • licensed for use if supplied by an agency
  • licensed to all States of Jersey online publishing, not just gov.je. All images on gov.je can be shared via social media
