Protected species and wildlife licensing

The Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021

This is the main law protecting wild animals, birds and plants in Jersey. Species listed in the law are protected from harmful activities, including their:

  • dens
  • nests
  • breeding sites
  • resting sites

The use of certain lethal methods of taking or killing all wildlife is also prohibited.

The possession, control and release of invasive non-native species of animals, birds and plants is also regulated under the law.

Areas of Special Protection can also be designated to protect the breeding or resting sites of protected species whilst in use.

If you're unsure if your actions are against the law, or have further questions, email

Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021 on the Jersey Law website
