About the project
Broad Street phase 1 includes the development of the Grande Rue district.
Our aim is to:
- prioritise walking and create more comfortable routes for pedestrians
- enhance the areas character, identity and greening
- create an appealing space for business and visitors
Phase 1 will include:
- pedestrian priority area with quality paving throughout and a flush walking space
- bespoke furniture for biodiversity planting areas and opportunities for varied seating, incorporating details that reference local history and identity
- new lighting and more efficient use of other street furniture
It will create a gateway to the future Broad Street space and will function as a gateway, including:
- reduced access width will allow two-way cycling
- morning deliveries until 10am

Construction activities will avoid high summer and Christmas peak retail periods wherever possible.

Access for Phase 1
Pedestrian access to all businesses and premises will be maintained during the works.
Cyclists will need to dismount to pass the works areas.
For deliveries and operational needs within Broad Street, temporary unloading arrangements will be provided.

Bus diversions for all phases
When Phase 1 works start, the following outbound bus routes will be diverted.
The diversions will be in place for all Phases of the Broad Street Public Realm project.
Routes number 5, St John’s Church and number 19, La Pouquelaye via:
- Esplanade
- Castle Street
- La Route de la Liberation
- Esplanade, calling at existing bus stop West Park Slipway (2852)
- St Aubin’s Road
- Pierson Road, calling at existing bus stop Lewis Lane (3534)
- Cheapside
- The Parade, calling at existing bus stop The Parade (2785)
- rejoining existing route on Gloucester Street
Routes number 20, TownLink and number 24, Grand Vaux via:
