Avoid and report internet scams and phishing
Revenue Jersey will never ask you:
- for your online password or activation PIN
- for any personal or financial information in an unsolicited email or telephone call
- to pay by any method or account other than those specified on our payment information pages on our website
Phishing, quishing emails and texts
Phishing is the fraudulent act of emailing or texting someone to get their personal or financial information.
Quishing is when the fraudster includes a QR code which then takes you to a fake website. It exploits the gap in traditional detection technologies by taking advantage of QR codes' image based format.
These emails or texts will often include links to fake websites or include bogus telephone contact numbers where you will be encouraged to provide your personal details.

Suspicious activities on your tax account
If you experience any of these, be suspicious and report it:
- an unexpected email for an online return you've not filed
- any email or text appearing to be from Revenue Jersey telling you to claim a repayment by clicking on a link or by calling a telephone number
- any unsolicited telephone call, email or text asking you for log in or password information to any of our tax services
- you stop receiving expected and routine correspondence from Revenue Jersey
If you need to report any suspicious activity on your tax account, call Revenue Jersey immediately.
Scammer attacks aimed at other jurisdictions
You'll sometimes see scam emails or texts aimed at people who file in the UK or other countries.
These messages are sent to thousands of people and they all have one thing in common, trying to obtain personal or account information.
Do not reply to these emails or texts.

Online filing reminder
If you file online you'll get an email to let you know when it's time to file your tax return. You'll also get reminders leading up to the deadline date.
Online filing confirmation email
Once you've submitted your online personal tax return you'll get an email acknowledgement confirming safe receipt with a copy of your return attached. It doesn't request any details from you and it won't tell you about any refunds or payment of tax.
Revenue Jersey emails
If you file online we'll periodically send you important updates about tax. These updates will never ask for payment or ask you to provide any personal information like your date of birth or bank details.
Personal tax return
If you're required to file a return and don't file online we'll send you a paper tax return to complete each year. The address to send the return back to us will be the same as we publish on our website or in the local directory. You'll be able to independently check the address.
Effective rate notice (ITIS)
This is a paper or email notification sent during the year by Revenue Jersey. It's sent to the address we hold on our records. Both versions includes your Tax Identification Number, Social Security Number, percentage rate, the issue date and the expiry date. Give this notice to your employer.
The effective rate notice will sometimes tell you if there is an expected shortfall in your payments but it'll never include a demand for payment or provide repayment information.
Tax assessment notice
This is a paper notification sent out after we have dealt with your tax return and includes the amount of tax and long-term care you've been charged on the front and the calculation on the back. If you need to make a payment on account the payment details are same as we publish on the website.
Default or estimated notice
This is a paper notification that's sent out if you haven't filed your return. It includes an estimate of your tax, any penalties and tells you what you need to do next. If you need to make a payment the details will be the same as the ones we publish on the website.
Campaigns
We'll periodically write out to a large group of people. These letters will sometimes require you to contact us. The contact details on the letters will be the same as those we publish on our website or in the local directory. You'll be able to independently check any genuine contact details.
QR codes
We will sometimes include QR codes on leaflets and other information. These will always only direct you to our website or Government of Jersey online forms which you can also access through the website, gov.je. We will never direct you to a third party website.
