All paperwork for the Jersey Bursary for post graduate support, including the referee documents, must be completed and sent to Student Finance by Saturday 1 May.
Once you have completed this HE1 online form all other forms will be forwarded to you for completion. Late applications for this bursary will not be accepted.
Professional qualifications (PGCE, legal courses)
We offer financial assistance towards certain one or two-year postgraduate professional qualifications that are a pre-requisite to going into a profession, for example:
- PGCE
- Diploma in Social Work
- Legal Practice Course (LPC)
- Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)
These are funded in the same way as an undergraduate award.
How to apply
To apply for funding towards a professional qualification, you'll need to complete the HE1 form online below.
If your course starts anytime between January and June, you need to apply before 31 December in the year before your course starts.
If your course starts anytime between July and December, you need to apply by 31 March in the year your course starts.
Within a month of submitting your application, you'll receive either an approval letter with an income statement or a letter letting you know you're not eligible for funding.
Dependant or independent student
You're an independent student if:
- you're 25 years old on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
- you're married or in a civil partnership
- you've been living financially independently of your parents for at least three years before the start of your degree
- have a dependent
- care leaver
If you don't match any of the above you're a dependent student.
Residential criteria guide
If you're a dependent student you and your parents:
must have lived in Jersey for five years immediately on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
would have been resident but they were, or are, temporarily employed outside the Island
You also meet the residential criteria if you've not lived in Jersey for five years but your residential status is Entitled and you've:
3. lived in Jersey for at least 12 months on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
If you're an independent student you:
must have lived in Jersey for five years immediately on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
would have been resident but you were, or are, temporarily employed outside the Island
You also meet the residential criteria if you've not lived in Jersey for five years but your residential status is Entitled and you've:

Time off island or 'gap year'
If you match point one or two for either independent or dependent students then you're able to leave the island for no more than a total of 12 months within those five years. If you match point three for either independent or dependent students, please contact Student Finance for details.
Jersey Bursary
If you want to undertake a full-time postgraduate master's degree or a doctorate, which Student Finance do not fund, you can apply for the Jersey Bursary.
This is a non-means tested competitive award. A bursary of up to a maximum of £10,000 can be awarded to a candidate towards their postgraduate course.
Whether you have previously received funding for a masters level or not you can apply for funding for study at doctorate level.

have been accepted, either firmly or provisionally, an offer from a university / college to undertake a course of postgraduate study

have achieved a minimum of an upper second class honours degree (2:1)
How to apply for the Jersey Bursary
To apply for funding towards a full-time postgraduate master's degree or a doctorate, you'll need to complete the HE1 form. You need to complete the HE1 Form as an Independent Student.
Once you have completed the online HE1 application form, you will then need to complete the Jersey bursary application form by 1 May. This will be sent to you from Student Finance by email once your HE1 Form has been approved.
You should also provide us with copies of your degree certificate, or if you haven't been awarded your degree, a statement of your academic standing from your university / college.
Late or incomplete applications won't be accepted.
You can only submit one application for one academic year.
After you've submitted your application
A short list of applicants will be agreed by a panel before the end of May.
If you're shortlisted, you'll be invited to an interview in July where you'll be asked to give a 10 minute presentation to the panel on your chosen topic of research or study.
The panel will comprise of:
- the minister for education, sport and culture (or his representative)
- the director for education, sport and culture (or his representative)
- a Student Finance officer
- a senior academic advisor from the UK
- an independent person
How the bursary will be paid
The bursary will be split into three payments and sent direct to your bank account.
If your course is longer than a year, payment will only be made after a satisfactory annual report.
