About Trident
Trident is an unpaid work experience programme that all Jersey students in secondary schools take part during Year 10. It’s an opportunity to experience working life while at school.
Trident is part of the school curriculum and gives students the chance to:
- develop and practice essential skills such as time management, teamwork, initiative and communication
- gain a real understanding of working life and employers’ expectations
- become more confident in your abilities
- work alongside adults as part of a team
- relate your school curriculum and qualifications to the work place
- make more informed decisions about your future
- build contacts that may help you with future employment
How to apply for your Trident placement
The Trident team at Skills Jersey will come into your school to talk to you about the programme and explain what you need to do.
You’ll need to:
- After we have been in to your school you will receive your username and password to log on to the work experience database (Navigate).
- Search the opportunities that are available for your school’s placement dates. We have a variety of industry sectors available to choose from.
- Select six choices from our list of opportunities and complete an application for each one.
There are many opportunities to choose from in the database, or you can arrange your own work placement.
You can be placed in any of your choices so make sure you are happy with all of them. You cannot change your placement after an employer confirms it.
What to consider when you choose
It can be something:
- that interests you, and relates to your hobbies or school subjects
- that you have never thought about before, but would like to try
- that gives you enough experience to seek weekend and summer paid employment in the future
- that develops a particular skill set
- that you’re thinking of doing as your career and want to see what it’s like
- that you’d just simply like to try out
You should also consider:
- the placement location and how you’ll get there each day
- the working days and hours. Some have standard hours and others have a shift pattern
- the environment you would like to experience such as working in an office, outside, in a group or more individually
- if you would like to be customer facing or work behind the scene
Arrange your own work placement
If there’s an organisation not on our database, there is the potential for you to organise your own work experience placement with them.
How to arrange your own work placement:
- Contact trident@gov.je with the name of the company you are considering approaching to organise an own placement. You cannot work with close relatives, and the company needs to have at least two people within the business.
- If Trident confirm this company is not already part of the Trident programme, they will send you an own placement form to complete.
- Approach the organisation. If they are able to offer you work experience during your placement dates, send them the own placement form to complete.
- We still need you to apply for six opportunities from the database to use as back up if the own placement falls through.
After your placement is confirmed
We try to confirm your placement 3 weeks before your placement period.
You’ll receive an information pack at school that includes:
- blue agreement form. This will have the details of your placement provider
- additional information for specific placements
- before starting work experience important reminders
When you receive your information pack you will need to contact your placement provider as soon as possible to arrange a placement visit.
You must bring the blue agreement form to preplacement visit and get it signed by the placement provider. You must return the signed form to your school before your placement starts. If you do not return the form you will not be allowed to start your placement.
If you struggle to contact your placement provider, speak to your Trident Coordinator at school or contact the Trident team.
Reselection and early preplacement visits
Reselection
Each year we have students that need to log back on the database and make more selections. This happens when your Trident choices have either been allocated to another student, due to it being a very popular and oversubscribed opportunity, or the placement provider’s circumstances have changed and are unable to accept a student during your Trident placement dates.
This is not a reflection on you or your application, we have many students who need to reselect.
If you need to reselect you will receive an email from the Trident team which will tell you what to do. If you need help making your new choices, please speak to your school Trident co-ordinator or contact the Trident team.
Early placement visits
Some employers may ask for an early preplacement visit, before the usual 3 weeks. This can happen because of extra processes they need to complete to make sure everything is ready for your first day.
The Trident team will contact you via email and you’ll need to contact your placement provider as soon as possible.
