You must make all changes to a vehicle's registration details by completing the relevant sections on the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1).
Once you have completed the relevant sections, you should deliver the VRD1 to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) within 7 days.
Transfer ownership of a vehicle
If you buy or sell a Jersey registered vehicle, the buyer and seller must complete the following details on the reverse of the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1).
There is no fee for this service.
Buyer (new owner)
- complete section 1 of part A
- sign and date box 1 of section 4 of part A
- sign and date box 3 of part B
- complete the remainder of part B (excluding box 4)
Once the seller has completed their sections, ensure that you're given part A of the VRD1 and return it to Driver and Vehicle Standards within 7 days.
Seller (current owner)
- make sure the buyer has completed their sections
- sign and date box 2 of Section 4 of part A
- sign and date box 4 of part B
- separate the VRD1 and give part A to the buyer
You must return part B to Driver and Vehicle Standards within 7 days.
Change your address or name
If you change your address or name you need to update your details on the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1):
- complete the new details in section 1 of part A on the back of your VRD1
- sign and date box 1 of section 4 of part A
- return the whole document to DVS within 7 days of the change
For change of name, you also need to send proof of your new name. For example, a copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll.
For change of address only, you can also update your contact details with Government departments. You'll need your Government digital ID. An updated VRD1 will be sent to your new address.

Request a replacement Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1)
If you've lost or damaged your VRD1, complete the application form below to receive a replacement.
To complete the online form you need to have either JerseyMe or Yoti digital ID set up.
Request a vehicle registration document
A replacement VRD1 costs £18.40.
If you can't use the Digital ID or the online form, you can request a replacement VRD1 document by filling out the form below:

If using the paper form, you can pay by:
- card
- cheque (payable to the Treasurer of the States)
- cash
Do not send cash by post.
If your replacement includes a change of name or address, your application must be accompanied by photo identification.
Once completed, you can return the paper form to DVS by:
Changes to your vehicle's details
If you change any of the vehicle details shown on the front of your Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1), including new paint colour or change of engine size, you need to:
- complete section 3 of part A, noting the changes to the vehicle details
- sign and date box 1 of section 4 of part A
- if engine has been replaced, provide proof of origin
- return the VRD1 to DVS within 7 days

Permanently export or scrap your vehicle
If you permanently export or scrap your vehicle you need to:
- complete the appropriate boxes in section 2 of part A of the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1)
- sign and date box 1 of section 4 of part A
- return the VRD1 to DVS within 7 days
There is no fee for this service.
Before you permanently export or scrap your vehicle, you can apply to retain the use of a registration number.
Transfer ownership following the owner's death
The process for the vehicle transfer depends on the value of the movable estate.
You don't have to pay for these transfers.
Movable estates of £30,000 or less
If the value of the estate is £30,000 or less you need to
provide:
- the completed form below for transfer of vehicle for small estates
- the original or certified copy of the death certificate
- if application, the deceaced person's will
- your photographic identification
- the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1)

Movable estates of more than £30,000
If the estate is more than £30,000 you need a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration to transfer ownership of a vehicle.
Probate Registry and Protection
The executor or administrator must act as the seller and complete the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1). The buyer should complete their required sections as detailed above.
If there's no buyer the executor or administrator can transfer the vehicle into their own name.
To complete the transfer the executor or administrator will need:
- completed VRD1
- original or certified copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration
- their photographic identification
